Little is known about the construction of the palazzo. From the structure, which is very irregular in terms of the floor plan, it can be concluded that the building was created through the interlocking of several porches. In 1553, Nikolaus von Lodron (1475–1556) is proven to be the first builder . His grandson of the same name (1549–1621) and father of Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron also carried out extensive construction work. He is present as a larger than life figure in a wall niche facing the courtyard and with an inscription above the main entrance to the representative wing in the long wing ( NICOLAUS.P.COMES.LODRONI.DNI.CASTRI.NOVI.PARIS.FILIUS.1593 ). The Prince Archbishop Paris Lodron, who was born in Castelnuovo , continued his father's building work and commissioned his court builders Santino Solari and Donato Arsenio Mascagni in 1626 to redesign the representative wing. Since the Lodrons also had the blood judiciary , a spacious courtroom was built; the notorious witch trials took place here in the 17th century .

In 1769 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart visited Rovereto and the Lodrons on his trip to Italy. This visit was also reflected in a work by Mozart: In his opera Don Giovanni , Marzemino , who lives in the Adige Valley, is praised in a conversation between Don Giovanni and his servant Leporello: Versa il vino! Eccellente Marzemino! ...

The property has passed to the Graf Spiegelfeld families and the Volpini de Maestri, both descendants of the Lodrons. Today the palazzo has become a castle guesthouse and a venue for cultural and social events.
