Nikolaus von Wolkenstein (also Nikolaus von Wolkenstein and Rodenegg ; Nikolaus Freiherr von Wolkenstein ; * January 4, 1587 at Bruck Castle ; † April 6, 1624 in Padua ) was Bishop of Chiemsee from 1619 to 1624 .

Life

Nikolaus came from the Tyrolean noble family Wolkenstein-Rodenegg . His parents were Christoph von Wolkenstein the Younger (1516–1615) and Ursula von Madruzzo . Nikolaus was first canon in Bressanone and Trento and from 1604 in Salzburg , where he became court advisor in 1610 and officiated as governor in 1612 .

After the death of the Chiemsee Bishop Ehrenfried von Kuenburg , the Salzburg Archbishop Markus Sittikus von Hohenems appointed Nikolaus von Wolkenstein as his successor on March 8, 1619. During his tenure, regular visitations were carried out in the Diocese of Chiemsee . In order to limit the authority of the archdeacon of Herrenchiemsee , he set up the Deanery St. Johann in Tirol in the southern half of his district . This led to disputes between the archdeacon and the dean.

Nikolaus von Wolkenstein died in Padua during a trip to Italy. His body was buried in the family crypt in the Clouds in the Franciscan church of Borgo Valsugana .
