His father Balthasar von Kuenburg was a civil servant in the service of the Archbishop of Salzburg , his mother was Barbara, née von Hausperg zu Vahenlueg. Among his 13 siblings, most of whom died early, his sister Margaretha is known, who was abbess of the Göß monastery in Styria from 1611 to 1640 .

Although his parents were Protestants , Ehrenfried converted to Catholicism at a young age . From 1596 he studied briefly in Siena and then as an alumne at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome. In the same year he became canon in Regensburg , and in 1598 in Salzburg. He has been pastor of Laufen an der Salzach since 1603 .

After the death of the Chiemsee bishop Sebastian Cattaneo , the Salzburg archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau appointed Ehrenfried von Kuenburg as his successor on September 14, 1610 and consecrated him on November 27th. In 1613 he was accepted as a baron . Although he was proposed as provost by the Salzburg cathedral chapter in 1616 , he renounced the candidacy after the archbishop refused to approve.

During his tenure he arranged work on his Salzburg residence, the Chiemseehof, at his own expense . He campaigned for the improvement of the legal and economic situation, but left behind considerable debts when he died on November 9, 1618. He was buried in the Salzburg Franciscan Church. In addition to his family members, the Salzburg Brothers and Infirmary and the Franciscans received donations in wills .
