Hieronymus Meitting (also: Meittinger or Meuting ; * 1496 in Augsburg ; † 1557 ) was Bishop of Chiemsee from 1536 to 1557 .

Life

Hieronymus Meitting came from an Augsburg patrician family . After studying in Ingolstadt , which he completed with the doctorate of a Dr. iur. utr. graduated, he became canon in Passau , where he was promoted to official . Later he held the office of an archbishop's council in Salzburg . On December 9, 1536, Hieronymus Meitting was appointed his successor by Salzburg's Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg , who himself administered the diocese for more than a year after the death of Chiemsee Bishop Aegidius Rehm . The episcopal ordination took place on December 17, 1536.

During his tenure, Hieronymus Meitting took part in the Salzburg Provincial Synods of 1537 and 1549 as well as in the Imperial Diets in Nuremberg (1542), Worms (1545) and Augsburg (1550). Presumably on behalf of the Archbishop he was present at the second session of the Council of Trent . With the provost of the Augustinian canons of Herrenchiemsee , who was also archdeacon of Chiemsee, he led protracted disputes over jurisdiction .
