Sebastian Stempfl

Sebastian Stempfl († April 12, 1418 in Brixen ) was Bishop of Brixen .

Sebastian Stempfl was of rural origin from Taisten in the Puster Valley , his father was a judge in Gufidaun. He studied in Vienna and Bologna and received a canonical in Bressanone in 1399 , was dean of the collegiate chapter in San Candido (San Candido Benedictine Abbey) in 1404 and dean of the cathedral in Bressanone in 1404. By building a chapel at the court, Oswald von Wolkenstein won the sympathy of Stempfl, who wanted to help him to a career in the bishopric.

The Brixen cathedral chapter elected Stempfl on June 23, 1417 without the influence of the sovereign as the successor to Bishop Ulrich Prustl , the election was confirmed by the Archbishop of Salzburg. A consecration by the pope was because of the schism not possible. The consecration took place by Archbishop Eberhard III. from Neuhaus . Bishop Sebastian died after a short reign and was buried in Brixen Cathedral .
