Johann Friedrich Münch

Johann Friedrich Münch (born August 6, 1729 in Basel ; † November 27, 1808 there ) was a Swiss politician.

Life

Johann Friedrich Münch was the son of the baker Johann Heinrich Münch (born November 14, 1702 in Basel; † August 30, 1750 ibid) and his wife Esther (born March 4, 1703 in Basel; † February 25, 1788 ibid), a daughter by Friedrich Bulacher (1670–1729), butcher. He still had two sisters.

In 1748 he began studying philosophy and law at the University of Basel . He continued these studies in 1749 with a degree in theology. Due to the early death of his father, he gave up his spiritual career and took over the father's bakery; In 1753 he was accepted into the Brodbecken guild and was its guild master from 1769 to 1808. In 1754 he was elected to the Sixth Council and member of the Grand Council of Basel. From 1769 to 1798 and from 1803 to 1808 he was a member of the Small Council; During these times he was from 1771 to 1798 and from 1803 to 1808 Council of Three and from 1777 to 1798 Privy Council (Council of Three). He was often sent as an envoy, several times to assemblies and to the conferences of the Protestant cantons and the surrounding areas, and was an important politician in Basel.

Johann Friedrich Münch was married to Anna (born January 17, 1717 in Basel; † March 1, 1786 in Basel), a daughter of Friedrich Duvoisin (1685–1761), baker, since April 5, 1756; they had a daughter together: Judith Münch (November 26, 1758; † unknown), married to Johann Rudolf Faesch (1744–1788), bailiff. Since October 23, 1786 in Kleinhüningen he was married to Ursula (1737-1805), a daughter of Niklaus Thurneysen (1714-1775), innkeeper of the inn Zum Schaf and court lord in Kleinbasel . They had no children together.

Memberships

Together with Peter Burckhardt , Andreas Buxtorf (1740–1815), Johann Rudolf Forcart (1749–1834), Andreas Merian-Iselin and Jakob Sarasin , he co-founded the Society for the Good and the Charitable Basel . He was also a member of the Helvetic Society , whose president he became in 1783.
