Eugène Lepoittevin

Eugène Modeste Edmond Lepoittevin , origin. Poidevin , (born July 31, 1806 Paris , † August 6, 1870 in Auteuil , today 16th arrondissement , Paris) was a French painter .

Life

In 1826 Lepoittevin came to the École des Beaux-Arts in his hometown at the age of 20 , where he became a student a. a. by Louis Hersent and Xavier Leprince . In the same year, Le Poittevin was allowed to take part in the major annual exhibition of the Paris Salon .

As a landscape painter , he found his subjects not only in his immediate surroundings, but also on his travels through France , Belgium , Great Britain , Italy and the Netherlands . Le Poittevin repeatedly addressed the coasts and beaches. In addition, he also tried history and genre painting .

His father Nicolas Potdevin comes from Rouen in Normandy . Carpenter and upholsterer, then chief carpenter in the Palace of Versailles, Versailles , where his parents settled. His father changes his name to Poidevin, Poitevin and then Lepoittevin.

Eugène Lepoittevin married Stéphanie Maillard, with whom he has two daughters, Eugènie (1845) and Marie (1846). The change of name to Le Poittevin is officially registered in 1845. His wife died in 1851. In 1861 he married Adèle Pironin. He dies in the house of her daughter Eugènie.

The landscape painter Louis Le Poittevin (1847–1909) was not his son but a namesake, cousin of Guy de Maupassant and son of Alfred Le Poittevin (1816-1848), poet and lawyer.

Lepoittevin knew how to liven up his works excellently, his figures have expression; its design is simple, its coloring is strong. Works by him can be found in the Musée du Luxembourg (sinking of the ship Le Vengeur ), in the galleries of Versailles , in the Raczynski collection in Berlin (the Flibustier ).
