James Edward "Jim" McGreevey (born August 6, 1957 in Jersey City ) is an American politician . He was the governor of the US state of New Jersey .

McGreevey was elected in 2001 and sworn in in 2002. He is a member of the Democratic Party and was previously Mayor of Woodbridge and Member of Parliament for New Jersey. From 1990 to 1992 he was a member of the General Assembly and from 1993 to 1997 the State Senate .

On August 12, 2004, McGreevey gave a press conference in which he cited an affair with another man as the reason for his resignation.

McGreevey has a daughter from his first marriage to the Canadian Kari Schutz. Another daughter comes from his second marriage to the Portuguese Dina Matos. McGreevey is currently separated from his second wife and is pending divorce proceedings. He converted from the Catholic Church to the Episcopal Church of the United States of America .
