Johann Matthias Bernuth , von Bernuth since 1786 (born May 24, 1716 in Groß Rosenburg ; † August 6, 1797 in Xanten ) was a German civil servant.

Life

family

Johann Matthias was a son of Johann Heinrich Bernuth (1692–1754), a teacher in Groß Rosenburg and his wife Catharina Magda, née Hoff (* 1692). He had eight siblings, including Jakob Christian (1729–1797), who was married to Clara (1747–1818), a daughter of the general practitioner Barthold Florian Gerstmann.

Johann Matthias von Bernuth was married to Anna Louisa (1736–1800), a daughter of Gerhard Haentjens (1704–1775), a customs controller in Lobith . They had five children together:

  • August Christian (1754–1819), councilor and land rent master in Kleve ⚭ Christina Haebert (1756–1831);
  • Christina (1755–1831) ⚭ Karl Kanitz;
  • Friedrich (1757–1832), President of the Chamber in Minden and Aurich
∞ Henriette Hopmann (1762–1790);
∞ Sophie Charlotte Hopmann (1775–1805);
  • Louise (* 1762);
  • Christian (* 1771).

Career

Bernuth attended the Domgymnasium Magdeburg and enrolled on December 31, 1735 at the law faculty of the University of Halle .

In 1744 he entered the camera service and in 1745 became secretary at the War and Domain Chamber in Kleve. In September 1763 he was promoted to War and Domain Council . Since 1770, making the Ruhr navigable was one of his tasks. At the suggestion of Friedrich Wilhelm von der Schulenburg-Kehnert , he was appointed chamber director in Kleve in May 1779 and was thus the successor to the late Johann Friedrich Lilienthal (1719–1779). His previous office went to Christoph Friedrich Wilhelm von Hagen (1754–1813 ). In this position, Bernuth was raised to the hereditary Prussian nobility on November 20, 1786 together with his brother Jacob Christian .

In the spring of 1788 there was a denunciation from Kleve both against President Julius Ernst von Buggenhagen and against him, in which he was accused of dubious credit behavior and his large fortune. At his own request, he took his leave with an ordre dated June 13, 1788 and then received a pension of 600 thalers. His retirement was justified on the grounds of his health, but the main cause was the fiscal investigation against him. Due to the old age of Johann Matthias von Bernuth, the king rejected the investigation in mid-June 1788; later research proved the baselessness of the allegations.
