Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Bernuth , from 1786 von Bernuth (born February 10, 1757 in Kleve ; † October 8, 1832 in Düsseldorf ) was a high-ranking official in the French and Prussian services.

family

He came from a family from Groß Rosenburg ( Grafschaft Barby ) and was the son of the royal Prussian war and domain chamber director in Kleve, Johann Matthias Bernuth (1716–1797), who with his descendants on November 20, 1786 in Berlin in the Prussian hereditary nobility was raised.

Bernuth married Hennriette Hopman on May 20, 1786 in Kleve (born July 29, 1762 in Kleve; † May 30, 1790 ibid). After her death, Bernuth married her second marriage on March 2, 1792, also in Kleve, with her 13 years younger sister Sophie Hopman (* 1775 in Kleve, baptized on October 8; † March 20, 1805 in Minden ). A total of 11 offspring resulted from both marriages.

Live and act

Bernuth completed his education at the Archigymnasium in Soest in 1775 . He then studied law in Halle . In 1778, von Bernuth was appointed government trainee with the government in Kleve and passed the assessor examination in 1782 . In the same year he first became a chamber assessor and at the end of the year war and domain councilor at the war and domain chamber in Kleve, where his father worked. In 1803 he was appointed President of the Chamber in Minden . In the same position he worked in Aurich from 1805 . In 1808 he became a member of the Masonic lodge at the golden harp in Leer .

After the end of Prussian rule in East Frisia , Bernuth entered the service of the new Napoleonic kingdom of Holland . In 1808 he became a State Councilor in Utrecht . In 1809, Bernuth was appointed General Director of the State Domains in Amsterdam . In 1810, after the French occupation of northern Germany, he returned to Aurich as a contribution director in French services. A short time later he became the director responsible for collecting direct taxes. Towards the end of 1813 he was prefect of the Ems-Oriental department .

After the restart of Prussian rule in Westphalia , he first became a member of the government commission in Bielefeld . July 15, 1816 start work on August 1 until his retirement on March 24, 1825 was Bernuth first district president of the governmental district Arnsberg . During this time he participated in the organization of the Landwehr .
