Friedrich Heinrich von Bernuth

Friedrich Heinrich "Fritz" von Bernuth (born May 14, 1789 in Kleve ; † February 7, 1859 in Wesel ) was a Prussian administrative officer. From 1818 to 1859 he was district administrator of the Lower Rhine district of Rees and relocated its administrative headquarters to the city of Wesel.

Life

Von Bernuth was born in Kleve as a member of the Bernuth family. In 1818 he was appointed district administrator for Rees County. This Prussian administrative unit was founded in 1816 as an aftermath of the Congress of Vienna and had only been run by two provisional district administrators before von Bernuth took office. Von Bernuth lived in Aspel Castle , which he had acquired through his marriage to the Dutch aristocratic family van den Broek.

In 1837, von Bernuth applied to move the district office from Rees to Wesel. Like Emmerich , Wesel was significantly larger than the district town of Rees and already had numerous important institutions in the district. In any case, Rees had only become the seat of the district because Wesel was originally planned to be spun off into a separate district. However, a personal motive for relocating the district office was that von Bernuth, as the father of a total of eight sons and two daughters , wanted his sons to attend school at the Wesel grammar school and there was no comparable school in Rees. Although his application found support within the district, it was initially rejected. In 1841 the application was finally granted, provided that the district councils agreed. This approval was given on February 15, 1842 and the relocation was completed on December 1, 1842. He sold Aspel Castle, which belonged to his property, in 1845. Instead, he moved into a representative house on Ritterstrasse in Wesel, which was the main building of the medieval Augustinian monastery in Wesel . He carried out his office as district administrator until his death in 1859.

According to the original decision, the relocation of the District Office to Wesel should be limited to von Bernuth's term of office. In 1861, however, Wesel was confirmed as a district town in a brief decision, so that the Rees district had its seat in Wesel until its dissolution at the end of 1974.
