Friedrich Wilhelm Graf von der Schulenburg-Kehnert (born November 21, 1742 in Kehnert ; † April 7, 1815 ibid) was a Prussian officer , most recently General of the Cavalry and Minister at the General Directorate and the Upper War College.

Friedrich Wilhelm was the son of the same name of the Prussian officer and Herr auf Kehnert, Farsleben and Uetz Friedrich Wilhelm Freiherr von der Schulenburg (* October 10, 1710 - February 5, 1752) and his wife Juliane Luise Sophie, née von Sydow (* 4. June 1719; † August 24, 1774).

career

Schulenburg-Kehnert received his first education at the Altstädtisches Gymnasium in Brandenburg an der Havel, from 1754 attended the school at Berge Kloster near Magdeburg and on September 21, 1757 switched to the Brandenburg Knight Academy . Then he joined the cuirassier regiment "von Manstein" No. 7 on March 16, 1760 as a cornet and took part in the Seven Years' War as an adjutant to the head of the regiment from 1761 to 1763 . In 1766 he was discharged from the army "because his arm is lame" .

In 1770 Schulenburg-Kehnert was appointed as the successor to Christoph Albrecht von Auer as president of the Magdeburg War and Domain Chamber. In 1771 he was called to Berlin and appointed Minister for the 3rd Department. At the same time he took over the presidency of the main bank board. Under Friedrich II , Schulenburg-Kehnert was also responsible for forestry, the mining and smelting department, coinage, the lottery, general tobacco administration and maritime trade . As part of the so-called Schulenburg Land Survey, the state territory of Prussia east of the Weser was mapped by the cartographer Schmettau ( Schmettausch's maps ).

In 1778 he became minister of war and worked out the mobilization plan for the army on behalf of the king. In 1791 he was appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs by Friedrich Wilhelm II . For his services, Schulenburg-Kehnert was made a knight of the Black Eagle Order on March 25, 1784 and hereditary count on October 2, 1786 . After the campaign he retired to his estates in 1795. The newly created office of general controller of finance offered Schulenburg-Kehnert the opportunity to rise to prime minister, but he refused. After being promoted to General of the Cavalry on May 20, 1798, Schulenburg-Kehnert acted as Postmaster General from March 30, 1800 . In 1805 he took over the administration of the newly acquired Electorate of Hanover and became interim governor of Berlin . In this capacity, after the battle of Jena and Auerstedt on October 17, 1806, he issued the following, now famous announcement:

“The king lost a bataille. Now rest is the first civic duty. I urge all residents of Berlin to do so. The king and his brothers live! "

With the arrival of the French in 1806, he moved to Königsberg , where he was in charge of military and civil affairs there.

Kehnert Castle

Since his possessions were in the Kingdom of Westphalia , Schulenburg-Kehnert resigned from Prussian services and entered Westphalian services in 1806. He became a state councilor and president of the war section in Kassel . He had the castle in Kehnert built in 1803 according to plans by Carl Gotthard Langhans .
