Renato Soru (2008)

Renato Soru (born August 6, 1957 in Sanluri , Sardinia ) is an Italian entrepreneur and politician .

In June 1997 he founded the telecommunications company Tiscali . Through this company he became the richest man in Italy in 2000 with a private fortune of four billion US dollars.

In 2004 he was elected President of the Italian region of Sardinia after leaving his post as CEO of Tiscali.

His politics as President of Sardinia led to differences of opinion with the parties that supported him. On November 25, 2008, Soru announced his resignation after losing a vote of confidence in parliament. Nevertheless, he appeared again in the new election on February 15 and 16, 2009, but lost to his competitor Ugo Cappellacci ( PdL ), who won the election with 52 percent.

In 2014 he was elected to the European Parliament for the Partito Democratico . In May 2016, Soru was sentenced in the first instance to three years in prison for tax evasion. He then resigned from his group, the group of the Progressive Alliance of Social Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D), in order to prevent damage to his group and went on appeal against the judgment. After the appellate court acquitted him in May 2017 of the charge of tax evasion, he rejoined the parliamentary group.
