Johan Frans van Bemmelen

Johan Frans van Bemmelen (born December 26, 1859 in Groningen , † August 6, 1956 in Leiden ) was a Dutch paleontologist and zoologist.

Life

Johann Frans was the son of the chemist Jacob Maarten van Bemmelen and his wife Maria Boeke (born June 28, 1833 in Amsterdam, † September 28, 1905 in Leiden). Initially he had attended the higher middle school in Arnhem and, after his father moved to Leiden, frequented the municipal high school in Leiden and the higher middle school there. On November 19, 1875 he enrolled at the University of Leiden , where he completed a degree in natural sciences. After he received his doctorate in botany and zoology on March 30, 1882 under Christiaan Karel Hoffmann with the topic Over de bouw der schelpen van brachiopoden en chitonen (German: About the construction of the shells of the arm- pods and the sub-genus of the beetle snails chitonen ), In the same year he became an assessor at the zoological laboratory in Utrecht .

From 1882 he continued his studies at the University of Jena , in 1884 at the zoological station in Naples and in 1885 at the University of Heidelberg . In 1888 he became a teacher of plastic anatomy at the Reichsnormalschule for drawing lessons in Amsterdam , in 1890 he went on a scientific trip to the Dutch East Indies , where from 1891 he taught natural history at the Willem III grammar school in the Jakarta district of Meester Cornelis . In 1894 he returned to the Netherlands, where he found a job as a teacher at the grammar school in Westeinde in The Hague .

In 1895 he completed his habilitation as a private lecturer at the University of Utrecht and in 1906 became an associate professor of paleontology at the Technical University of Delft .

In 1907 he was appointed professor of zoology, comparative anatomy and physiology at the University of Groningen . He took up this position on May 4, 1907 with the introductory speech Verdwenen dieren (German: lost animals ). In the academic year 1918/19 he participated as rector of the Groningen Alma Mater in the organizational tasks of the university, for which he gave the rector's speech Hedendaagsche dieren (German: Today's animals ) on September 15, 1919 .

In 1930 he retired, where he held his farewell speech Toekomstige dieren (German: future animals ) on May 17, 1930 . After his retirement, van Bemmelen became director of the Dutch Bio-Genealogical Institute in Leiden. His scientific merits were recognized in 1915 when he became a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and was made Knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion .

Van Bemmelen married on July 8, 1897 in The Hague with Adriana Jacoba Paulus (born June 27, 1873 in The Hague, † March 19, 1945 in Leiden). The daughter of Jozias Paulus and Berendina Wiebler. The marriage resulted in a son and two daughters. From the children we know:
