Erica Reiner

Erica Reiner (born August 6, 1924 in Budapest , † December 31, 2005 in Chicago ) was a Hungarian - American ancient orientalist .

Erica Reiner first studied linguistics at the University of Budapest . She then attended the École pratique des hautes études in Paris , where she studied Elamite , Sumerian and Akkadian . Her doctorate took place in Chicago in 1955, which is where her future life should be.

In 1952 she began working on the Assyrian dictionary as an assistant at the University of Chicago . The first volume of this Chicago Assyrian Dictionary , founded in 1921, in which she participated, appeared in 1956. By 2005, 23 volumes had appeared, two more in print and the 26th and final volume in the final stages. For more than 20 years (1973 to 1996) Reiner was the responsible editor. In addition to this work, she was professor at the Oriental Institute ( John A. Wilson Distinguished Service Professor ) until her retirement . She was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1976 and the American Philosophical Society in 1982.
