Furuyama Komao
Furuyama Komao ( Japanese 古 山 高麗 雄 ; * August 6, 1920 Sinŭiju in the P'yŏngan-pukto Province (North Korea); † March 14, 2002 Sagamihara , Kanagawa Prefecture ) was a Japanese writer and essayist.
Born in Japanese-occupied Korea, Furuyama took part in World War II in Indochina and was sent to a French prisoner-of-war camp in Saigon in 1946. In 1947 he returned to Japan and wrote for various newspapers there.
It was not until 1969 that he made his debut as a writer with the successful novel Pureō eito no yoake , in which he presented his experiences as a prisoner of war. In 1970 he was awarded the Akutagawa Prize for the work. For Semi no tsuioku he received the Kawabata Yasunari Literature Prize in 1994 and the Kikuchi Kan Prize in 2000 .
