Fred T. Jane
John Fredrick Thomas Jane , known by his pseudonym Fred T. Jane (born August 6, 1865 in Richmond , Surrey , England , † March 8, 1916 ) was a British naval war historian.
Life
Even as a teenager, Jane became interested in shipping and sketched many warships . In 1889 he was commissioned by a magazine to report on the Spithead Review of the Royal Navy, a fleet inspection in Spithead .
In 1898, Jane founded Jane's Information Group . The reference works “All the World's Fighting Ships” for warships and “All the World's Air-ships” for aircraft, which are still published by this publisher, are now considered reference works .
Jane was also politically active and a strong opponent of the Liberals. When the left-liberal candidate Edward Hemmerde was nominated for election in 1910 , Jane decided to disrupt the election campaign. At the station he met Winston Churchill , who wanted to give a speech in support of Hemmerde. Instead of driving Churchill to the agreed venue, he took him to the country, which prevented Churchill from delivering his speech.
