Life stations

Hans Jacobus attended the Jewish school on Große Hamburger Straße in Berlin and then began an apprenticeship as a druggist, which he had to break off after the pogrom night in 1938 . Because of his Jewish descent, he emigrated to London with a group of children in 1938 (see Kindertransport ). After the outbreak of World War II, he was interned in Australia as an " enemy alien " . He later returned to London and was involved in the Free German Youth . He lived there with interruptions until 1947, most recently as a teacher for children who were released from the concentration camp.

In 1947 he returned to Germany in the Soviet zone of occupation and joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED). He was initially editor of the daily newspaper Junge Welt , later from 1949 to 1953 editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Deutsches Sportecho . In a hysteria at that time against Western emigrants , he was deposed, taken into custody for seven months and then sent to production on probation .

From 1955 to 1976 he was editor-in-chief and political commentator at Berliner Rundfunk , and from 1976 to 1985 editor-in-chief of the cultural-political weekly newspaper Sonntag . He was retired in 1987. In 1990 he turned to the PDS . In his later years he wrote a number of books of memories.

The series Das Professoren-Kollegium Tag has been broadcast for almost 27 years on Thursday evening from 8:00 p.m. live on the radio of the Berliner Rundfunk and on Saturday afternoon as a recording simultaneously on German television (later television of the GDR ) with Jacobus as the presenter.

In 1983 he was awarded the Gold Medal for the Patriotic Order of Merit .
