Johannes Siegrist

Johannes Siegrist (born August 6, 1943 in Zofingen ) is a Swiss medical sociologist and university professor . Until 2012 he was director of the Institute for Medical Sociology at the Medical Faculty of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf and head of the postgraduate course in Public Health there . Since 2012 he has held a senior professorship for psychosocial workload research at the Medical Faculty of Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. He is also a member of the University Council of Düsseldorf University.

Life

Johannes Siegrist studied sociology at the University of Basel and at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg . 1969 he earned a doctorate Dr. phil. In 1973 he qualified as a professor in sociology. From 1973 to 1992 he was professor for medical sociology in the human medicine department at the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1992 he was appointed to the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Institute for Medical Sociology. At the same time he was entrusted with the management of the postgraduate course in Public Health . Johannes Siegrist also held visiting professorships at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore , USA , and at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna .

Scientific achievements

Siegrist postulated the model of the professional gratification crisis as a model of disease development ( see also: disease model ).

Johannes Siegrist made a name for himself as the author of numerous original scientific papers, particularly on the connection between stress in working life and illness, as well as socially differential health in old age . He is also the author of several books, including the textbook Medical Sociology (6th edition).

Scientific awards

Johannes Siegrist has received several national and international awards, including a. as a member of the Academia Europaea (London, 2000), member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences (2004), President of the International Society of Behavioral Medicine (1996–1998), Director of the Scientific Program on Social Variations in Health Expectancy in Europe , European Science Foundation , (1999-2003). In 2004 Siegrist received the research award of the European Society for Health and Medical Sociology .

Research funding from the tobacco industry

In the 1980s Siegrist had some of his research work financed by the tobacco industry through third-party funding . This was critically discussed in an article in Der Spiegel magazine.
