Gerhard Sevenster

Gerhard Sevenster (born November 13, 1895 in Beets ; † August 10, 1985 in Wassenaar ) was a Dutch Reformed theologian and church historian.

Life

Gerhard was the son of pastor Jan Sevenster (born September 23, 1869 in Schingen; † January 2, 1949 in Epe) and his wife Johanna Wilhelmina Adolphina Bogtstra (born November 14, 1871 in Stiens; † February 17, 1934 in Hogebeintum). After attending grammar school in Leeuwarden , he studied theology at the University of Leiden from 1915 . After passing in 1920 his candidate exams, he was born on February 6, 1921 Reformed pastor in Anloo , in April 1923 pastor in Hoorn , on June 10, 1928 pastor in Purmerend and on 28 September 1930 pastor in Boxum. On July 10, 1929 he had in Leiden under Hans Ludwig Windisch with the topic Ethiek en eschatologie in de synoptische Evangeliën. Een study over het typical in Jezus' zedeleer (German: ethics and eschatology in the synoptic gospels. A study of the typical in Jesus moral teaching. ) Doctorate in theology.

During his pastor phase, Sevenster had written articles in the Nieuw Theologische Tijdschrift and De Smidse , and also worked as a teacher of Hebrew at the grammar school in Leeuwarden. On June 8, 1933, he was appointed to the professorship of theology and reformed church history at the University of Leiden, which task he took up on October 20, 1933 with the introductory speech De leniencedeprediking in evangelie en humanisme (German: The Sermon of Love in the Gospel and Humanism ). On October 23, 1953, he switched to the professorship of the New Testament and early Christian literature. In the academy year 1961/62 he became rector of the Alma Mater , for which he gave the rector's speech De Verwachting van een nabij koninkrijk in het Nieuwe Testament (German: The expectation of a near kingdom in the New Testament ) on the 387th anniversary of the university on February 8, 1962 . He ended his career on May 31, 1966 with his farewell speech De eenheid van de kerk in het Nieuwe Testament (German: The unity of the Church in the New Testament ) and was retired on June 16, 1966.

Gerhard Seventer married on January 28, 1921 in Leeuwarden with Catharina de Buck (born August 6, 1895 in Oostkapelle; † July 18, 1981 in Leiden), the daughter of Pieter de Buck (born November 23, 1866 in Koudekerke; † 3 June 1920 in Leeuwarden) and his wife Johanna Catharina Agatha Vermaas (born March 29, 1876 in Gapinge, † August 12, 1952 in Hilversum). There are four children from the marriage. We know of these:

  • Jan Sevenster (born December 31, 1921 in Anloo, † December 26, 1943 in Apeldoorn) student of theology
  • Johanna Catharina Agatha Sevenster (born February 16, 1923 in Anloo) head nurse
  • Pieter Sevenster (* May 2, 1924 in Hoorn; † January 19, 2014 in Oegstgeest) Professor of Ethology at the University of Leiden, m. with Anna Catharina Angela Bol (born June 17, 1931 in Tandjung Pandang; † May 5, 2000 in Warmond)
  • Abraham Sevenster (born December 2, 1928 in Purmerend; † December 20, 2015 in Leiden) teacher, married. on May 7, 1960 in Oosterbeek with Aleid Hedwig Hermine Blink (born October 9, 1935 in Wassenaar)
