Hugo Martin Tetrode (born March 7, 1895 in Nieuwer Amstel, today: Amstelveen , † January 18, 1931 ) was a Dutch physicist .

life and work

Tetrode came from a very wealthy family, his father Pieter Johan Conrad Tetrode was director of De Nederlandsche Bank from 1919 to 1934 . From 1911 he studied mathematics, physics and chemistry for a short time in Leipzig , but returned to the Netherlands in 1912 . There he lived withdrawn, corresponded with well-known physicists of his time ( Albert Einstein , Hendrik Antoon Lorentz , Paul Ehrenfest ) and published several important physical treatises. At the same time as Otto Sackur, he developed the Sackur-Tetrode equation to describe the entropy of ideal monatomic gases, which he published in the Annalen der Physik in 1912 ( The chemical constant of the gases and the elementary quantum of action , Annalen der Physik, Volume 38, 1912, p 434-442, Corrigendum Volume 39, p. 255). Another work dealt with electrodynamics as a classical theory of action at a distance, only with a direct interaction between particles without the mediation of a field and thus influenced the action at a distance absorber theory of John Archibald Wheeler and Richard Feynman in the 1940s (as well as Karl Schwarzschild and Adriaan Fokker ). He was unmarried and died of tuberculosis .
