Josef Ignaz Amiet

Josef Ignaz Amiet , also Joseph Ignaz (born February 1, 1827 in Solothurn , † May 28, 1895 ibid), was a Swiss historian , state clerk and state archivist .

Amiet, who had to break off his history studies at the University of Bern in 1848 for financial reasons and then worked in state archives, published numerous papers on the history of Switzerland with a focus on the canton of Solothurn . Along with Friedrich Fiala and Jakob Amiet , he was one of the most important exponents of the “History Research Association of the Canton of Solothurn” (today the Historical Association of the Canton of Solothurn ). From 1857 to 1874 Amiet was secretary of the «General History Research Society of Switzerland», today the Swiss Society for History . From 1861 until 1895, the year of his death, he was state clerk and state archivist in Solothurn.

Josef Ignaz Amiet was the father of the painter Cuno Amiet (1868–1961).
