Luis Emilio Mena

Luis Emilio Mena (born November 12, 1895 in Santo Domingo ; † November 15, 1964 ibid) was a Dominican composer and musician.

At the age of fourteen, Mena played the flute in the orchestra of the Colegio Santa Teresita under the direction of José de Jesús Ravelo . The following year he became a member of the Octeto del Casino de la Juventud and in 1916 professor of flute at the Liceo Musical . In addition to the flute, he also played the cello, piano and bassoon.

His first composition, created in 1913, was the mazurka La chaquetera Mignon Lucesita ( Lucila ). In 1926 he won the competition for the Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) with the Pasodoble Alfonso XIII. In 1932 he was one of the founding members of the Orquesta Sinfónica de Santo Domingo , which he also conducted at several radio concerts. His compositions became known in the USA as early as the 1930s.

Mena's daughter Elila Mena became known as a pianist.
