Jacinto Guerrero

Jacinto Guerrero y Torres (born August 16, 1895 in Ajofrín , † September 15, 1951 in Madrid ) was a Spanish composer.

As a child, Guerrero played fanfare in the Ajofrín municipal band, which was directed by his father. In 1904 he joined the boys' choir of the Cathedral of Toledo, whose conductor was the Catalan musician Lluis Ferré . From 1914 to 1917 he studied at the Conservatory of Madrid with Conrado del Campo and Benito García de la Parra . In 1915 he joined the orchestra of the Real Tetro Apolo as second violinist , and later became its director.

In 1921 his first Zarzuela La Alsaciana was premiered in Barcelona . This was followed by La Montería (in Zaragoza) and Los Gavilanes (1923 at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid). Zarzuela El Huesped del Sevillano, based on a libretto by Juan Ignacio Luca de Tena and Enrique Reoyo , was a great success and premiered in 1926 at the Teatro Apolo .

After the Teatro Apolo closed in 1929, Guerrero went to Paris, where he published the Paris-Madrid revue with Raquel Meller . Commissioned by the director GB Samuelson , he composed the music for La canción del día in 1930 , one of the first Spanish sound films. In the same year he traveled to America for the first time with a revue and a tzarzuela troupe and performed his works in various cities in Argentina.

When the Spanish Civil War broke out , Guerrero first went to Paris, then to San Sebastián in 1937. In 1940 he was awarded the Order de Isabel la Católica , and in 1943 the Order Alfonso X el Sabio . In 1944 his comic opera ¡5 minutos nada menos! almost 1900 performances at the Teatro Martín in Madrid. In 1945 Guerrero composed the music for the first Spanish animation film, Garbancito de La Mancha .

In 1948 Guerrero succeeded Francisco Alonso as president of the Sociedad General de Autores y Editores . In this capacity he made trips to New York, Paris, Brussels and Lisbon, among others. In 1951 he died of an operation in Madrid. In 1977 his brother Inocencio Guerrero founded the Fundación Jacinto e Inocencio Guerrero . On his 100th birthday, the city of Madrid posthumously awarded him the Medalla al Mérito Artístico .
