Raquel Meller
Raquel Meller ( Francisca Marqués López ; born March 9, 1888 in Tarazone , † July 26, 1962 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish singer and actress.
Francisca Marqués came from a poor family. She grew up in a monastery and only returned to her family at the age of twelve, who now lived in Barcelona. She worked there as a seamstress. One of her customers, the singer Marta Oliver , discovered her musical talent and from 1906 helped her to perform as a couplet singer at La Gran Peña . She soon received other offers and appeared in 1911 at the opening of the Trianón Palace in Madrid with Amalia Molina , Pastora Imperio and La Goya . In the same year she starred in the program at the Arnau Theater in Barcelona and has since performed as Raquel Méller.
The first recordings and appearances followed, including in El Dorado in Barcelona. There was also international success. In 1919 she made her debut at the Olympic Theater in Paris . On her return to Spain, she got the lead role in Ricardo de Baños ' film Arlequines de Oro y Seda . This was followed by roles in La gitana blanca (1919), Violettes impériales ( Henry Roussel , 1924) and Carmen ( Jacques Feyder , 1926).
In 1919 Meller married the Guatemalan journalist and diplomat Enrique Gómez Carrillo . Together with him she went on an international concert tour that took her to Buenos Aires and London, among others. The couple separated again in 1922. In 1926 the promoter Ray Goetz brought her to New York to perform at the Empire Theater . In 1932 she shot a sound film version of the film Violettes impériales , another film production was interrupted by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. From 1937 to 1939 Meller lived in Argentina, then returned to Spain, but could no longer build on her earlier successes.
