Erich Abberger

Erich Abberger (born April 6, 1895 in Cologne , † May 3, 1988 in Wiesbaden ) was a German major general in World War II .

Life

On March 24, 1914, Abberger joined the 1st Rhenish Pioneer Battalion No. 8 of the Prussian Army as a flag junior . With his battalion he took part in the First World War and was promoted to lieutenant on December 31, 1914 . On October 20, 1915, he was seriously wounded on the Western Front . After his recovery in March 1916, he was initially transferred to the replacement pioneer battalion No. 8, but returned to the front in June. On November 7, 1916, he became an adjutant in Pioneer Battalion No. 8 and in May 1917 took over as a company commander in the 1st Reserve Company. In October 1918 he was promoted to first lieutenant . During the war, Abberger received the Iron Crosses II and I classes as well as the wound badge in black.

After the war he was accepted into the provisional Reichswehr . On June 21, 1919 he became adjutant of the Reichswehr Pioneer Battalion 30. The following year he held the same position in the Reichswehr Pioneer Battalion 16. With the formation of the Reichswehr Abberger became a company officer in the 4th Pioneer Battalion in Magdeburg . In 1923 Erich Abberger was transferred to the headquarters of the Breslau commandant . On February 1st, 1928 he was promoted to captain and appointed chief of the 1st company in the 1st (Prussian) Pioneer Battalion in Königsberg . In 1933 he was transferred to the Königsberg headquarters. On November 1, 1933, he was promoted to major . From 1935 he commanded the Pioneer Battalion 5 in Ulm . In 1937 he became the director of the officer courses at the Pioneer School I in Berlin, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on August 1, 1937 .

On October 1, 1939, he became a group leader at the General of Pioneers and Fortresses. Abberger was promoted to colonel on July 1, 1940 . In December 1942 he was transferred to the Führerreserve of Military District III and finally appointed Senior Engineer Officer 3 on May 1, 1943. As such, Abberger became major general on January 1, 1944. At the end of the war, Abberger was taken prisoner of war, from which he was released on June 27, 1947.
