William Katz

William Katz (actually Wilhelm Katz ; born December 15, 1895 in Diemerode near Kassel ; died January 31, 1988 in Sydney ) was a German-Australian teacher, cantor and rabbi .

Life

After finishing school, Katz attended the teachers' seminar in Kassel from 1912 . He was at times a student of Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig . At the age of 26, Katz passed the state examination in 1921 summa cum laude .

Since 1919 he worked as an assistant teacher in various Jewish communities . From 1921 to 1939 he worked as a teacher in Beckum (Westphalia), Mönchengladbach and Kassel , among others ; from 1929 also as cantor.

The Central Association of German Citizens of Jewish Faith appointed Katz to its board in 1929. He held this office until 1938, when the National Socialists removed him from office. Katz was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp , but was released again after a while.

In 1939 Katz was able to emigrate to Australia . From 1940 he worked in Sydney as a rabbi and principal of a religious school. In 1960, at the age of 65, Katz resigned from these offices and retired. In 1980 he published his memoir.

William Katz died in Sydney in 1988 at the age of 93.
