Chi Omega ( ΧΩ ) is an international sorority student association and the largest female student association in the world.

history

Chi Omega was founded on April 5, 1895 at the University of Arkansas by Ina May Boles, Jean Vincenheller, Jobelle Holcombe and Alice Simonds. It now has 178 active student chapters or local associations at university locations, and over 240 associations for alumni (see also old gentlemen ) after completing their studies. With over 330,000 corporates, it is the largest female fraternity in the world. As a women's organization, it has retained the name “women's fraternity”. Chi Omega has been a member of the National Panhellenic Conference , the central American union of female student associations , since 1903 .

The Eleusis has been published as the journal of the association since 1899 . In 2013 the magazine had a circulation of over 200,000 copies.

Chi Omega is designed as a bond of life . Friendship, personal integrity, service to others, academic excellence such as intellectual pursuit, social and student engagement, and personal and professional development are among the internal ideals. The ethos of connection was laid down in the so-called Chi Omega Symphony, which Ethel Switzer Howard wrote in 1904, among other things.

In addition to the community during the studies and the networking of the alumni, Chi Omega has also made charitable initiatives its task. The Make-A-Wish Foundation has been the official partner since 2002.

In 1906, fourteen pearls or diamonds were set as badges, which reproduce a monogram of the name in Greek letters. The badge is only to be worn over the heart by initiated members in formal clothing and takes precedence over all other pins.

Honors and controversies

The Chi Omega Greek Theater at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville , built in 1930, is built in the antique style of a Greek temple . The building, which is also used for public events, is considered a lasting legacy of the connection and was honored by the university itself with a commemorative plaque.

In 2014, a Chi Omega at the University of Alabama was disconnected from the association after posting a racist slur on social media . The chapter at Pennsylvania State University was  closed by the governing body after a party with a motto that was considered offensive to Mexican Americans .
