Ashton Keynes is a place and a civil parish in Wiltshire , England on the border with Gloucestershire . The place is approximately 8 km south of Cirencester and 5.6 km west of Cricklade . In 2011 the Civil parish had 1,400 inhabitants. The place is located in Cotswold Water Park and is the only place that has substantial hamlets on both parts of the Thames , which is divided into many arms here.

The hamlet of North End is also in the Civil parish.

The place

The place was known as Aesctun in the year 800 and is mentioned in the Domesday Book with the Cricklade hundred as Essitone . The place changed its name ten times in the next 800 years.

A large Roman-British settlement was on the outskirts of the present-day location and was excavated in the late 1980s prior to extensive gravel extraction. The Ashton Keynes Castle a fortification from the 12th century is located north of the village.

The 18th century Ashton House is a Grade II protected structure.

The Church of England parish church of the "Holy Cross" is a Grade I protected structure. The building dates from the 12th century and was restored by William Butterfield in 1876–77 .

Ashton Keynes is twinned with Grandchamps-des-Fontaines .

The Swill Brook flows south of the village into the Thames.
