Wiktor Łabuński

Wiktor Łabuński (born April 14, 1895 in Saint Petersburg , † January 26, 1974 in Kansas City ) was a Polish-American composer, pianist and music teacher.

The brother of the composer Feliks Łabuński had piano lessons with Adolf Jaroszewski in Moscow from the age of six . At the age of ten he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory . There he attended the piano classes of Leonid Nikolajew and Feliks Blumenfeld and studied chamber music with Vasily Ilyich Safonow . In 1918 he continued his piano training with Emil Młynarski in Warsaw . From 1919 to 1928 he was professor of piano at the Conservatory of the Kraków Music Society . He has also given concerts in Poland under the direction of conductors such as Grzegorz Fitelberg and Hermann Abendroth and has also performed in England, Romania and France.

In 1928 he went to the USA, where he made his debut in New York's Carnegie Hall that same year . This was followed by appearances in Minneapolis, Nashville, Chicago and Toronto and a US tour as piano accompanist for Ada Sari . At the same time he directed the piano class at the Nashville Conservatory until 1931. From 1931 to 1934 he taught at the Memphis Music College . After a stay in Poland from 1934 to 1935, where he performed as a pianist and conductor on behalf of the music organization ORMUZ, he headed the music college in Memphis until 1937. In 1937 he took over the piano class at the Kansas City Conservatory, of which he was director from 1941 to 1958. He continued teaching until the end of his life as professor emeritus and artist in residence at the University of Missouri . The Curtis Institute of Music honored him in 1935 with an honorary doctorate.
