Lindley Evans

Harry Lindley Evans (born November 18, 1895 in Cape Town , † December 2, 1982 in Greenwich ) was an Australian pianist , composer and music teacher .

Evans sang in the choir of St. George's Cathedral in Cape Town as a child , and he also played the organ and piano. After the family moved to Australia in 1912, he studied piano and composition with Frank Hutchens at the New South Wales State Conservatorium of Music in Sydney . Later he took piano lessons from Tobias Matthay in England .

From 1920 to 1929 Evans taught at the Presbyterian Ladies' College in Croydon. He was then a visiting professor at the Methodist Ladies' College in Burwood until 1946 . He also taught from 1928 to 1968 at the State Conservatorium , of which he was a director until 1974.

As a chamber musician, Evans initially worked with the flautist John Lemmoné . 1922-23 he was the piano accompanist of Nellie Melba in England, then on her tour of Australia. From 1924 he formed a piano duo with Frank Hutchens until his death in 1965.

In the 1920s, the Australian Broadcasting Co. broadcast adaptations of his lessons in music reception under the title Adventures in Music . In 1936 Evans composed the music for Charles Chauvel's film Uncivilized and then went to Hollywood to learn more about film production. After that, several film scores were created, such as Ken G. Halls Tall Timbers (1937) and Chauvel's Forty Thousand Horsemen (1940) and The Rats of Tobruk (1944).

From 1939 Evans took part in the children's program of ABC , where he was known as Melody Man in the show Argonauts Club , which ran until 1969. His interest in music education for children led him to the National Music Camp Association . He has worked with the Australian Youth Orchestra since it was founded in 1957 and for the Australian Music Examinations Board .

In addition to the aforementioned film scores, Evans also composed a choral symphony, works for piano and orchestra, songs and pieces for piano duo and piano solo. In 1963 he was named Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George .
