The Luigi Lavazza SpA is an Italian coffee company based in Turin . The company is active in the fields of cultivation, processing and distribution of coffee beans and flour , as well as catering .

history

Lavazza was founded in Turin in 1895 by Luigi Lavazza . Initially, coffee was roasted and sold in a small retail store. His grandson Emilio (1932–2010) built the company into one of the largest coffee groups in Italy. Today Lavazza is best known for espresso coffee and exports worldwide.

Lavazza SpA is still in the fourth generation of the family. In recent years Lavazza has also started opening its own coffee houses, mainly in major Italian cities and at motorway service stations , and is now also coming to Germany occasionally. The company employs around 3,000 people worldwide and generated sales of around 2 billion euros in 2017 .

criticism

In June 2010 the German Coffee Association Hamburg was accused by the Federal Cartel Office of having promoted a cartel of coffee companies with a press release in February 2005, which is why a fine of up to 90,000 euros was imposed. In addition to Lavazza, the coffee roasters involved included Kraft Foods Aus Haus Service (Bremen), Tchibo (Hamburg), Seeberger (Ulm), Segafredo Zanetti Germany (Munich), Gebr. Westhoff (Bremen), Melitta System Service (Minden), and JJ Darboven (Hamburg). The latter two companies received reduced fines because of their cooperation in investigating the allegations.
