German Coffee Association

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The German Coffee Association eV represents the interests of the entire German coffee industry , whose roots go back to 1886. At that time, the interest group for coffee traders was founded as the "Association of Companies Participating in the Coffee Trade", which later became part of the German Coffee Association. The association has around 220 members and represents both large and small companies in the coffee industry. Members include green coffee traders , green coffee agents and brokers, warehouse keepers, roasters, decaffeinators , manufacturers of soluble coffee and soluble coffee beverages, franchise system providers, food laboratories, manufacturers of roasters, manufacturers of plant technology, producers of coffee machines and vending machines, and sustainability organizations.

The German Coffee Association is committed to positive framework conditions for the coffee industry. It represents the interests of its members on a national and international level. The association sees itself as a service point for coffee in Germany and offers interested parties comprehensive information on coffee.

In February 2014, the association was founded by the German Association for Association Management e. V. (DGVM) named “Association of the Year” in the “Representation of interests and communication” category. In February 2018 the association received another award, this time in the category "Reform and Management.

The general manager since February 2007 is Holger Preibisch, who previously worked as a manager at the German Coffee Association. Members of the board of directors and the presidium are (as of June 2018): Bent B. Dietrich (HACOFCO), Luc van Gorp (JACOBS DOUWE EGBERTS DE GmbH), Bernd Schopf (Caffein Compagnie Erich Scheele GmbH & Co.KG ) and Frank Strege (Melitta Europa GmbH & Co. KG).

The Federal Cartel Office imposed in June 2010 against some coffee roasters and the German Coffee Association due to illegal price fixing - in this case a so-called clear hardcore antitrust violation - fines totaling 30 million euros. A working group existed from 1997 to 2008 that met in the premises of the German Coffee Association and consisted of managing directors and sales managers from coffee roasters. The following companies were affected by the fine: Kraft Foods , Segafredo Zanetti , Melitta , Tchibo , Darboven , Luigi Lavazza , Seeberger and the Westhoff brothers .

Since 2006, the German Coffee Association has been initiating the "Coffee Day" every year, on which campaigns relating to coffee take place throughout Germany, which are organized by member companies of the association and other coffee-related companies, institutions or associations. Until 2015, the day of action was celebrated in September with the support of prominent German patrons from TV, music, sports and entertainment - including u. a. Nina Ruge (2006), Erol Sander (2007), Tanja Szewczenko (2009), Olivia Jones (2014) and Sky du Mont (2015). After more than ten years, “Coffee Day” takes on an international character in 2016 and will henceforth be celebrated on October 1st together with the newly created “International Coffee Day”. The International Coffee Day is organized by the International Coffee Organization (ICO).

In addition, the association organizes several information events and congresses each year, and it also conducts its own market research studies.
