Isobel Baillie

Isobel Baillie (born March 9, 1895 in Hawick , County Roxburghshire , Scotland , † December 24, 1983 in Manchester , England ) was a Scottish singer (soprano).

Life

Isobel Baillie was the youngest child of a Scottish master baker and his wife. Her musical talent was recognized early on, and from the age of 9 she received singing lessons and won a scholarship for high school in Manchester, where the family had meanwhile moved. In 1917, during the First World War , she married Henry Leonard Wrigley and they had a daughter together.

In 1921 she made her first major appearances with the Manchester Orchestra and in 1923 her first appearance in London , with notable success. 1925–1926 she received further training from Guglielmo Somma in Milan . Then she had great success in England singing oratorios .

From 1955 to 1957 and from 1961 to 1964 she taught at the Royal College of Music in London and from 1970 at the Manchester School of Music .
