Kadish Luz ( Hebrew קָדִישׁ לוּז Qadīš Lūz ; * January 10, 1895 as Kadisch Lužinskij Cyrillic Кадиш Лужинский in Babrujsk , Russian Empire ; † December 4, 1972 in Degania ), Israeli politician who was Minister of Agriculture (1955-1959) and spokesman for the Knesset (1959-1969).

Life

He served in the Russian Army during World War I for the last two years of the war on the Eastern Front and was one of the founders of the Hebrew Soldiers Union. After the October Revolution of 1917 he was assistant to Joseph Trumpeldor in founding the Zionist youth organization Hechaluz . He studied polytechnics at universities in Russia , Ukraine , Estonia and Germany , economics at the Economic Institute of the University of Saint Petersburg and agricultural science at the Institute of Agriculture at the University of Odessa .

He made his Aliyah to Palestine in 1920 and worked as a farmer in Kiryat Anavim and Be'er Tuvia . The following year he joined kibbutz Degania B and was finally a member of the secretariat of the kibbutz union between 1949 and 1951. He was also among the leaders of the Histadrut , whose finances he oversaw as auditor with committee members between 1935 and 1940. Between 1941 and 1942 he was a member of the Secretariat of the Tel Aviv Workers' Council .

He was elected to the Knesset in 1951 via the Mapai list and appointed Minister of Agriculture by David Ben-Gurion in 1955. After leaving the cabinet in 1959, he became spokesman for the Knesset and remained so for 10 years, making him the second longest term in office after Yosef Sprinzak . After the death of Jizchak Ben Zwi , he headed state affairs as acting president from April 24, 1963 to May 21, 1963.
