Menachem Savidor

Menachem Savidor (born August 20, 1917 in Bachmut , Ukraine , † November 2, 1988 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli politician who was temporarily president of the Knesset .

Life

British Army and IDF officer and manager

After he moved to Białystok with his family in 1922 , he first attended school in Poland and then studied at Vilnius University . After a stay in Japan in 1941 he joined the British Army as a soldier and served in it during the Second World War before retiring from active military service in 1946. During this time he attended courses and seminars in management , logistics and economics in the British Army as well as in France and the United States .

After the establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, it was transferred to the Israel Defense Forces , which was founded on May 31, 1948, and initially served there as the founder and first commander of the Military School for Organization and Management. He was then head of the police and disciplinary department and retired from active military service in 1953 as a lieutenant colonel .

Subsequently, Savidor, who also became a member of the General Zionist Party in 1953 , became deputy director in the Ministry of Transport. From 1954 to 1964 he was general manager of the state-owned railway company Israel Railways , before he was general manager of Vered , a subsidiary of the construction company Rassco, until 1967 . He then was General Manager of the Citrus Fruit Export Company between 1968 and 1977 .

Besides Savidor began his political career and was 1969-1974 member of the city council of Tel Aviv and there at the same time Chairman of the Group of Gahal that in 1973 with the Herut to Likud merged. In 1976 he became vice-chairman of the Likud Central Committee and was also head of the party's think tank .

MP and Speaker of the Knesset

On June 13, 1977 Savidor was elected a member of the Knesset for the first time and represented the interests of Likud in this until August 13, 1984. Between June 1977 and July 1981 he was chairman of the sub-committees on energy-related supplies, the marketing of animal foods, the use of special train wagons and against tax evasion in agriculture. Most recently he was from July 20, 1981 to August 13, 1984 as Speaker of the Knesset ( Speaker of the Knesset ) President of Parliament.

After leaving parliament, he was first from 1985 to 1986 chairman of the public committee for the recovery of the economy and then in 1987 chairman of the Fund for the Security of Israel.

Later it was in honor of the main station of Tel Aviv in Tel Aviv Savidor Central Railway Station renamed.
