Dov Shilansky

Dov Shilansky ( Hebrew דב שילנסקי; * March 21, 1924 in Šiauliai , Lithuania ; † December 9, 2010 in Tel Aviv ) was an Israeli politician .

In 1944 he was in the Shavli Ghetto in Šiauliai to organize the resistance against the National Socialists. When the ghetto was dissolved, he was captured, deported to the Stutthof concentration camp and later to the Dachau concentration camp . In April 1945 he was part of a Dachau death march . On the night of April 30, 1945, however, the SS guards fled and left the prisoners behind.

After the Second World War he worked for the Irgun , an underground Zionist organization, in Rome and Germany . In 1948 he traveled to Israel on board the Altalena .

In Israel, he studied law at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem , where he received a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) in 1960 . As a lawyer, he was a member of the Israel Bar Association , the Israeli bar association , and was a member of its ethics committee. Shilansky was also a member of the International Organization of Jewish Law Professionals .

From June 13, 1977 to June 17, 1996 he was a member of the 9th to 13th Knesset for Likud . During the 12th Knesset, he was President of the Knesset from 1988 to 1992. He then served as Deputy Speaker of Parliament during the 13th Knesset. In 1993 he ran for the office of Israeli President , but was defeated by Ezer Weizmann with 66 to 53 votes. In 1996 he retired from politics and returned to work as a lawyer in the law firm Dov Shilansky & Co , which he founded in 1960 .

Shilansky wrote several books on political imprisonment as well as the Holocaust. His column was published regularly in the monthly magazine Eretz Yisrael .
