Nahum Nir ( Hebrew נחום ניר* March 17, 1884 in Warsaw ; † July 10, 1968 in Petach Tikwa ) was an Israeli politician of Polish descent and briefly President of Parliament in 1959 .

Life

Studies, job and political commitment

After attending school in Warsaw, he first studied science at the University of Warsaw , the University of Zurich and the University of Saint Petersburg . During his studies at the University of Warsaw he became a member of the Zionist student association Kedima in 1903 and in 1905 of Poalei Zion , a Marxist- Zionist circle of Jewish workers.

A postgraduate studies of law at the University of Saint Petersburg and the Imperial University Yuryev he finished in 1908 with the promotion of Doctor of Laws . Nir, who served four months in prison in 1906 for his political activities, was a delegate to the Zionist Congress in both 1905 and 1907 . He was also one of the founders of the World Union of Poale Zion, which held its first World Congress in The Hague in August 1907 .

After completing his studies, he settled as a lawyer in Saint Petersburg and later in Warsaw and was one of the participants in the Poalei Zion World Congress in Stockholm in 1919 , at which the Poalei Zion fell apart due to disagreements over Zionism, activities in Palestine and joining the socialist International split. In 1919, he was beyond as a member of the city council elected by Warsaw.

After his emigration ( Aliyah ) to today's Israel in 1925, he worked as a lawyer again. At the same time he continued to be involved in the Poalei Zion movement and became its secretary after the Left World Union of Poelei Zion split off . In this function he was also one of the negotiators who endeavored for the Union to join the Communist International . In the following years he was a member of the National Board of Left Poelei Zion , Vaad Ha'Leumi and the Political Committee of the Achdut HaAvoda-Poelei Zion party . He was also a member of the Provisional Council of State.

Political career in the State of Israel

After the establishment of the State of Israel on May 14, 1948, Nahum Nir was one of the 37 first signatories of the Israeli Declaration of Independence , he was elected to the Knesset as a candidate for the Mapam (United Workers' Party) on February 14, 1949 , but has already lost this mandate on August 20, 1951. On October 12, 1955, he again became a member of the Knesset and represented the interests of Achdut haAwoda until November 22, 1965 .

During his membership in the Knesset he was first from 1949 to 1951 Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Committee on Constitution, Law and Justice. He held the office of committee chairman again from 1955 to 1959.

After a brief activity as President of Parliament from March 2 to November 3, 1959, he was then again Deputy President of Parliament until November 1965. At the same time he was also chairman of the committee for the civil service between 1959 and 1965 and chairman of the joint committee for the growth of juvenile delinquency from 1961 to 1965 . Nahum Nir died on July 10, 1968 in Beilinson Hospital in Petach Tikwa.
