Degania Aleph

When "Degania" is used without further explanation, it usually means Degania "A" or "Aleph" . Degania A is the oldest of the Israeli kibbutzim and thus the forerunner of all later community settlements. It was founded on October 28, 1910 by a group of Zionist immigrants from Belarus . The name Degania is derived from the Hebrew word "dagan" - "grain" (however, citrus fruits and early vegetables were grown there). In 1911 a second group, based on the principles of collectivism, made Degania the “mother of collective settlements” and the model kibbutz, which Albert Einstein and Thomas G. Masaryk also visited.

The writers Aharon David Gordon and Joseph Trumpeldor were among the first to live and work in Degania . The politician and writer Shmuel Dayan was a co-founder of the kibbutz . His son Moshe Dajan , who later became Minister of Agriculture , Foreign Affairs and Defense , was one of the first children to be born in Degania. Many later kibbutz foundations were supported by the members of the settlement. Miriam Singer , who comes from Prague, has worked here as a kindergarten teacher since 1920 and in 1935 wrote the German-language children's book Kelle und Schwert: from the heroic days of Dagania .

Before the establishment of the State of Israel, Degania was important as a forward defense post; in the war of independence in 1948 , the Syrian army was stopped on site. Degania A had 752 inhabitants in 2016.

After all, Degania A is known as the birthplace of the Israeli general and politician Moshe Dajan .

Degania Bet

Degania "B" or "Bet" was created in 1920 in the immediate vicinity of the previous settlement. The main reason for the new establishment was that after the strong growth of the old settlement, the personal relationships within the community were seen as endangered. Degania B had 650 inhabitants in 2016.

hike

Degania is part of the northern Israel National Trail, a currently 1,100-kilometer long-distance hiking trail.
