Armenians killed in Erzurum

The Erzurum massacres of October 30, 1895 were part of the massacres of the Armenians 1894-1896 in the city of Erzurum , which were carried out on the orders of the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II . They were the forerunners of the Armenian genocide . The attacks were carried out by Ottoman soldiers who were supported by the local Muslim population. The Armenian shops and houses in Erzurum were looted and destroyed.

After the massacres, the British consul received two letters addressed to his brother and parents by an Ottoman soldier:

“My brother, if you want news from us, we killed 1,200 Armenians ... Mother, I am healthy ... Father, twenty days earlier we fought the war against the Armenian infidels. With the grace of Allah, no mishap has reached us. The rumors say our battalion is being dispatched to your part of the world. If this is the case, we will kill all Armenians there. 511 Armenians are wounded, and one or two more are starving to death every day. If you want messages from the soldiers and the Bashi-Bosuks : they didn't even have nosebleeds ... Allah bless you! "

- The Graphic , December 7, 1895, Massacres of Erzeroum of October 30, 1895

“Over 60,000 Armenians were slaughtered. In Trebizond , Erzurum , Yerznka , Hasankale and countless other places, the Christians were crushed like grapes during the grape harvest. "
