Maximilian Eugen Ludwig Friedrich Philipp Ignatius Joseph Maria of Austria , from 1919 Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen (born April 13, 1895 in Vienna , †  January 19, 1952 in Nice ), was a member of the Austro-Hungarian ruling family Habsburg-Lothringen . He was the brother of the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary.

Life

Maximilian Eugen was born in Vienna as the son of Archduke Otto (1865–1906) and Princess Maria Josepha of Saxony (1867–1944). He was the only brother of the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary, Karl I./IV. who ruled 1916–1918.

He married Princess Franziska zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst , a daughter of Prince Konrad zu Hohenlohe-Waldenburg-Schillingsfürst and his wife Countess Franziska von Schönborn-Buchheim , on November 29, 1917 in Laxenburg near Vienna, where his brother liked to reside during the war. In 1917/1918 he lived in Belvedere Palace in Vienna, which was last inhabited by the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este, who was murdered in Sarajevo in 1914 .

With the Nobility Repeal Act in April 1919, nobility and titles were abolished in the new Republic of (German) Austria. The full title and name of the now Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen had been His Imperial and Royal Highness Archduke Maximilian Eugen Ludwig Friedrich Philipp Ignatius Joseph, Royal Prince of Hungary and Bohemia. With the Habsburg law , the claims to power of the House of Habsburg were legally ended and the imperial family and all family members were expelled from the country who did not want to profess to be loyal citizens of the republic. Since Maximilian Eugen Habsburg-Lothringen refused, he had to live abroad, although he was still an Austrian citizen.

He died in Nice in 1952 and was buried in the crypt of the Castle Church of St. Michael in Altshausen Castle in Baden-Württemberg.
