Giovanni Comisso (born October 3, 1895 in Treviso , Italy , † January 21, 1969 there ) was an Italian writer , poet and journalist .

Life

Giovanni Comisso took part in the First World War and in 1919 followed the Italian writer Gabriele D'Annunzio to Fiume . He studied law and obtained his law degree from the University of Siena in 1924 , but never practiced the legal profession. Instead, he worked as a bookseller in Milan and as an art dealer in Paris . He also worked for major Italian newspapers such as La Gazzetta del Popolo , Corriere della Sera , Il Messagero and La Stampa . After the Second World War he worked for the newspapers Il Mondo , Il Giorno and Il Gazzettino . In his capacity as a journalist, he traveled to Northern Europe, Africa and the Far East.

In his early poems Comisso was still clearly under the influence of D'Annunzio; but soon he freed himself from its influence. In his stories and novels, especially about people and stretches of land by the sea, he shows a good gift for observation and uses a simple, realistic representation. He also wrote travel and memory books, especially the autobiography Le mie stagioni (Milan 1951).
