Mischa Mischakoff ( Mischa Fischberg ; born April 4 . Jul / 16th April  1895 greg. In Proskuriw , Podolia Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 1. February 1981 in Petoskey , Michigan , United States ) was a Ukrainian -American violinist and music teacher .

As a child, Mischakoff had violin lessons from Konstantin Konstantinowitsch Gorski . At the age of ten he became a student of Sergei Korgujew at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory . In 1911 he made his debut with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. After completing his studies in 1912, he went to Berlin for a short time before becoming concertmaster in Saint Petersburg.

During the First World War , Mischakoff served in a music regiment. In 1917 he played the world premiere of Sergei Prokofiev's First Violin Concerto under the direction of the composer . In 1920 he became concertmaster of the Bolshoi Theater Orchestra . Supported by the conductor Emil Młynarski , he fled to Poland in 1921 together with the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and then went to the USA. In 1927 he received American citizenship.

In 1924 he made his US debut as a soloist in Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto with the New York Symphony Orchestra under Walter Damrosch at the Aeolian Hall . He was concertmaster of the orchestra until 1927, then the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski (1927-1930), the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Frederick Stock (1930-1937), the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini (1937-1952) and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Paul Paray (1952–1968). Between 1925 and 1965 he was concertmaster of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra in the summers .

As a chamber musician, Mischakoff led the Mischakoff String Quartet . He also taught at the Juilliard School (1940–1952), Wayne State University (1952–1981), Boston University and the American Conservatory in Chicago. His students included Ani Kavafian , Joseph Silverstein , Isidor Saslav , Leonard Sorkin and David Cerone .
