Rudolph Arbesmann

Rudolph Eugen Arbesmann O.SA (born July 25, 1895 in Fürth ; † December 4, 1982 in New York City ) was an American classical philologist of German origin.

Life

After attending the Augustiner grammar school in Münnerstadt , Arbesmann took part in the First World War as a volunteer from December 1914 to December 1918 . As a lieutenant in the cavalry, he received both classes of the Iron Cross and the Bavarian Order of Military Merit . After the war he became a novice of the Augustinian order in 1919 . In 1923 he was ordained a priest in Rome and went to the University of Würzburg to study classical philology. Since 1918 he was a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Cheruscia Wurzburg .

During his studies and after his doctorate , Arbesmann continued to work for the order. He was elected Definitor in 1930 . In 1933 he went to Rome as a student priest. In 1934 he went to Chile to teach the novices and religious there. At the same time he held lectures at the Universidad de Chile in Santiago de Chile . In 1936 he moved to New York City , where he stayed for the rest of his life. In 1937 he was appointed Professor of Classics at Fordham University . He remained associated with this university long after his retirement. On December 4, 1982 Arbesmann died of complications from a stroke.

Arbesmann's research focus was ancient and medieval religious life, church history, and Christian ethics and doctrine. He has written numerous books and articles in German and English.
