Heinrich Rudolf Hermann Friedrich Gneist , from 1888 from Gneist , (born August 13, 1816 in Berlin , † July 22, 1895 in Berlin) was a Prussian lawyer and politician .

Life

Rudolf von Gneist attended high school in Eisleben and studied law in Berlin from 1833 , where he became a member of the old Berlin fraternity in the same year . After doctorate (1838) and habilitation (1839), he was a private lecturer at the law faculty of Berlin's Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität and taught as a professor of public law from 1844. In 1845 he was appointed associate professor and in 1858 full professor at Berlin University.

Gneist was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives and the Reichstag as well as the Berlin City Council (1845–1849 and 1858–1875). From 1867 he was a member of the leadership of the National Liberal Party . He advocated the expansion of Prussia to a constitutional state and an independent judiciary. To this day he is known primarily as a leading advocate of an independent and autonomous administrative judiciary.

Gneist was a co-founder and first president of the Association for Social Policy (" Kathedersozialisten "). He was President of the 7th (1868 in Hamburg), 9th (1871 in Stuttgart), 10th (1872 in Frankfurt am Main), 11th (1873 in Hanover), 12th (1875 in Nuremberg), 13th (1876 in Salzburg), 14th (1878 in Jena), 16th (1882 in Kassel), 17th (1884 in Würzburg), 18th (1886 in Wiesbaden), 20th (1889 in Strasbourg) and 22nd (1893 in Augsburg ) German Juristentage . No other lawyer faced this event so often. In 1888 he was made an honorary member of the Society for the Promotion of Charitable Activities in Lübeck because of his socio-political merits for the working class . In 1890 he was one of the founding members of the Association for Defense against Anti-Semitism .

He has a grave of honor for the city of Berlin in the Old St. Matthew Cemetery in Berlin-Schöneberg .

In 1888 Gneist was raised to the Prussian nobility.
