Hubert Materlik (born July 8, 1895 in Eichenau (near Opole ), † July 26, 1944 in Magdeburg ) was a resistance fighter against National Socialism and a KPD politician.

Life

Materlik was born the son of a master painter. He began an apprenticeship as a coppersmith , but had to give it up for economic reasons.

From 1914 to 1918 he took part in the First World War as a German soldier . He then joined the USPD , counting among their left wing. In 1920 he became a member of the KPD. In 1921 Materlik, who meanwhile worked for Fahlberg & List in Magdeburg- Salbke , was elected to the local works council. The unionized Materlik lost his job in 1923, presumably because of his political involvement. He held honorary functions within the KPD. Later he also worked as a driver .

After the National Socialists seized power in 1933, he joined the communist resistance. From 1937 he belonged to the resistance group around Hermann Danz . Materlik was arrested in March 1939 and was in custody until he was released in November 1941. He rejoined the resistance group around Hermann Danz, Johann Schellheimer and Martin Schwantes . His duties included contacting foreign forced laborers and distributing leaflets.

In July 1944 he was arrested again and tortured by the Gestapo . He hanged himself in his prison cell.

Honor

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor ( Materlikstraße ). The green space between the Palais am Fürstenwall , cathedral and cathedral grammar school also bears his name: material plant. A school was also named after him in the Reform district.
