Johann Schellheimer
Johann Schellheimer (also Hans ) (born February 18, 1899 in Höchst am Main , † February 5, 1945 in Brandenburg (Havel) ) was a German resistance fighter against National Socialism .
Life
Schellheimer was born the son of a woodcutter. During the First World War he was drafted as an apprentice for military service and was taken prisoner by the French , from which he was released in 1920. In 1921 he joined the French Foreign Legion for economic reasons , which he soon left. Schellheimer first went to Turkey and then returned to Berlin . There he worked as a casual worker.
In 1931 Schellheimer moved to Magdeburg , where he joined the KPD in 1932 . Politically, he worked in the Wilhelmstadt district . After the seizure of power of the Nazis , he was in the spring of 1933 for a few weeks in so-called protective custody taken. After his release he continued to work for the KPD, which worked illegally . In November 1933 he was arrested as a courier for the KPD district leadership and initially imprisoned for six months in the Esterwegen concentration camp . In Kassel he was sentenced to two years in prison.
After his release he worked in various companies in Magdeburg, most recently in the Hubbe & Farenholtz company . Together with Clara Schellheimer , his wife, and Hermann Danz , he built a resistance group in Magdeburg. However, this was revealed in July 1944. Schellheimer was arrested and sentenced to death in November 1944 . The enforcement of the judgment was made on 5 February 1945 in the Brandenburg prison .
Honors
During the time of the GDR , the former Hubbe and Farenholtz company, his last job, was named in his honor from 1952 as VEB Öl- und Fettwerke "Hans Schellheimer" . In addition, a central square in the former Wilhelmstadt district received its name ( Schellheimerplatz ), as did the Hans Schellheimer School . However, while the company went into liquidation in 1992 , the square and the school still bear his name to this day.
