Ewing system

C. Ewing's patent application US 541732: Rolling stock for single rail tramways (rail vehicles for monorails)

The Ewing system is a monorail concept that was patented by WJ Ewing at the end of the 19th century . It is not identical to the system patented by Robert W. Ewing much later .

With the Ewing system, wheels with double flanges run on a steel rail laid along a road. Most of the weight (around 95%) is transmitted through these wheels. A support wheel, or two support wheels for longer vehicles, transfer the smaller part of the weight to the road so that the vehicle does not tip over. The drive could take place as with the Kundala Valley Railway with draft animals or with the Patiala State Monorail Trainways built by William Thorold with steam locomotives.
