Ike Armstrong

Isaac John "Ike" Armstrong (born June 8, 1895 in Fort Madison , Iowa , † September 4, 1983 in Corona del Mar , California ) was from 1925 to 1949 the head coach of the American football team at the University of Utah . He won 13 conference championship titles with the team and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1957.

Life

Ike Armstrong was born in Fort Madison in 1895 and graduated from Drake University in Des Moines in 1923 , where he also played fullback for their college football team from 1920 to 1922 . After completing his studies, he initially worked at the college as a trainer before moving to the University of Utah in 1925 to take on the position of head coach of the Utah Utes .

In this role, in which he worked until 1949, he led the team in 25 seasons to a total of 13 championships in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and the Mountain States Conference . During this time, the team got five seasons without a loss and in 1938 the Sun Bowl won their first post-season bowl game. Ike Armstrong's overall record was 141 wins, 55 losses and 15 draws.

After coaching the Utah Utes, he served from 1950 to 1963 as the sports director at the University of Minnesota . In 1957, he was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as the only coach or player in the history of the University of Utah . He died in Corona del Mar in 1983 as a result of pneumonia .
