Mary Jane Carr

Mary Jane Carr (born April 23, 1895 in Portland , Oregon , † January 4, 1988 there ) was an American journalist and writer .

Mary Jane Carr was born in Portland and attended St. Mary's College in her home state of Oregon. She then embarked on a journalistic career, was an associate editor of the Catholic Sentinel newspaper for a few years and later switched to the Oregonian . Eventually she started writing children's books . Her first of these books, Children of the Covered Wagon. A story of the old Oregon trail (1934), which tells the story of the Oregon Trail from a children's perspective, is also her best known. The historical novel came on the shortlist of the Junior Literary Guild , experienced several editions and translations into other languages ​​and was finally filmed in 1956 by Walt Disney under the title The Caravan of the Fearless ( Westward Ho the Wagons! ). Of her other books, Young Mac of Fort Vancouver (1940) was also on the shortlist of the Junior Literary Guild ; In 1941 she received a Newbery Honor for the novel.

Mary Jane Carr died on January 4, 1988 at the age of 92 in her hometown of Portland.
